In Gravity Begins at Home, Guy Bolongaro grapples with his ambivalence toward the idealised family unit by documenting the daily maelstrom of his own family life. Composed of four expandable books held within a slipcase (finished with stickers applied by Bolongaro and his children), the photographer presents a view of family life that is certainly not bad but certainly not perfect. Objects are suspended in mid-air, garments are stretched, limbs enter the frames from every angle; the detritus of child’s play populates every image. The life presented is one that’s messy, unstable and chaotic, but also one that looks pretty fun, and ultimately joyful.
