It was in the twilight before the hippie movement that William Mathias Scholl invented the Pescura clog, with its curved beechwood footbed and adjustable upper strap. As with yoga and brown rice before it, the Pescura became an immediate success with the health-conscious set of the 1960s, who were lured by the shoes’ promise to promote fitness and Jean Shrimpton-esque legs. Now celebrating its 70th birthday, the salubrious Pescura is as charming as ever, residing comfortably in that intersection between wellbeing and style. As such, it has been the subject of many designer collaborations, from Balenciaga to Nº21. Each Pescura is hand-crafted in Italy, adhering to rigorous production values whilst evoking the feel of a sun-drenched holiday somewhere in coastal Italy. Encouraged to be worn alla nonna, the Pescura is about making an art out of comfort – although style is a welcome side effect. .
