British artist Katie Scott designed these patterns for Hermès after visiting the marine herbarium at London’s Natural History Museum, a 400-year old collection of more than 60,000 dried marine algae specimens. She narrowed the seaweeds down to five – sea algae, wakame, kallymenia, samphire and sea fans – and each of the 34 pieces bears a unique design.

The work of Georgian-Polish and French writer and artist Ilia Zdanevich, more commonly known as Iliazd, is perhaps under-recognised in his own right. Celebrated with the succinct exhibition The Study of Form (2025–2026) at the Dalle Nogare Foundation in Bolzano, the forms Iliazd designed and constructed reflected his eclectic interests: architecture (Byzantine churches in particular), travel itineraries, cartography, geological specimens and printmaking. The latter was perhaps his most celebrated pursuit at the time, with Iliazd designing patterns for the textile industry, and printing and composing his words into unique shapes on his precious chine and japon papers.
His career encompassed many notable collaborations, from Coco Chanel, for whom he designed intricate geometric fabrics that would move elegantly even after being cut in a bias bind, to Marcel Duchamp, for whom Iliazd’s encyclopaedic knowledge of pattern geometry helped Duchamp to realise his famous multimedia work La Boîte-en-valise (1935–1941).
His contributions to the creation of expressive forms evoke the transdisciplinary approach of art historian Aby Warburg, whose Nachleben theory – literally translated as “afterlife” or “survival” – describes the persistent and transformative presence of images and symbolic forms from the past. The Russian avant-garde theory of “Toustism” or “everythingism” provides a similarly useful gloss.
An all-encompassing artistic philosophy aiming to overcome the limitations of previous movements by embracing and combining elements from all eras, the theory was not in search of a banal eclecticism, but rather looked to synthesise disparate styles across time and place.
Among the most personal and recurring motifs in his work was that of his relationship with his many cats. Each was closely documented, with meticulous records of their needs and likes and beautifully illustrated birthday cards, worthy of inclusion in one of the world’s many cat museums, such as the KattenKabinet in Amsterdam. Azza Fahmy’s new scarab collection employs the insect as a symbol of birth, rebirth and regeneration. The Ancient Egyptians linked the scarab to the sun god Khepri, who rolled the sun like a ball of dung across the sky. Fahmy brings the sacred scarab into our century in gold and silver.
