One From the Heart
Maria Marshall creates work within film, photography, painting and printmaking: commonly, she presents experiential scenarios. Her works are intensely personal, translating in multi-media idiosyncratic emotion and feeling experienced at specific points in her life.
This new show of work brings together a series of films by Marshall in which children, predominantly her own, are the core focus of our gaze. These are films concerned with the fears associated with motherhood, ageing and growing. Themes not usually explored in artists' film and video, Marshall presents the very singular experience of parenting through her own expressed doubts and anxieties. These may or may not be collective worries but exhibited here are Marshall's exercises in personal therapy.
Maria Marshall has exhibited at major venues internationally. Her works are held in the collections including The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Contemporary Arts Society, London; and Fonds Regional d'Art Contemporain, PACA, Marseille; among others. Maria Marshall lives and works in London.
